Engadget Does It Again - They Have The Storm 2!!!

Engadget is one of my most visited sites on the Internet and it is no wonder when they get the scoops like this one. Yet again they a bang on the big releases with their hands on preview of the BlackBerry Storm 2 (ODIN). Unfortunately they could not use the device to its full extent as with this being a pre production model there are obviously issues with hardware and such things, so there is a “Bug” preventing the guys from pressing yes to the licence agreement.

Engadget do go on to comment about the build quality of the device and also the lack of the “award winning” surepress (clicky screen thing). Im not too bothered about that though as I would prefer a more solidly built phone, which I feel the Storm 1 is lacking.

The four buttons at the bottom have now been replaced by softkeys on the actual display. I know there was a hardware issue and a hell of a lot of people returning their phones because the buttons were falling off, so this seems to be an issue that RIM have “fixed” on the Storm 2. Once again in my oppinion a good move.

It just looks better than the original storm in all departments. It looks cleaner, crisper, more solid… I think it looks beautiful!

Its now not “if” the Storm 2 will be released but “when”. I sure as hell cant wait to get this little baby in my hands! Lets hope Vodafone do the right thing and offer us a replacement Storm 2.

T-Mobile (UK) Introduce Pay As You Go BlackBerry

Some months ago we first mentioned about Orange introducing the BlackBerry Pearl on pay as you go and now it seems T-Mobile have followed suit. One thing I like about the T-Mobile add on of free internet and e-mail for a year which I believe is £5 a month on orange so thats a saving of £60 which is quite substantial.

Just like Orange, T-Mobile are offing the BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and the initial outlay for the phone is $179.99 which is slightly dearer than the Orange price which is £145 but you have to buy an intial top up of £20 or more.

If your interested here is the official press release that I found on the T-Mobile website:

London, 23 April 2009: T-MobileUK today unveils a new way to pay for a BlackBerry®smartphone: Pay once for a silver-coloured BlackBerry® Pearlâ„¢ 8110 smartphone and a year’s unlimited* email and internet access.

The ˜Pay once’ concept is a market first, giving people the chance to experience the hugely popular BlackBerry email service and access to internet sites and social networks on the move for a year “ all for just a single payment of £179.99. Customers just have to top-up their credit as usual to make calls and send texts and picture messages.

T-Mobile’s new offer is set to make BlackBerry smartphones accessible to new groups of mobile phone customers. It’s sure to be a hit with students, letting them stay connected to family and friends by email, via IM, Facebook or MySpace. And for those just starting out in business “ whether they’re running a small business or entering the workplace for the first time “ it’s the perfect way to access personal and work emails, without the worry of hidden costs.

The ˜Pay once’ concept also makes giving a BlackBerry as a gift viable for the first time, as there’s no ongoing cost involved for the person giving the gift, and the recipient just pays for top-ups for calls and texts when they want to.

The T-Mobile BlackBerry Pearlâ„¢ 8110 smartphone comes in silver, and features a 2 Mega pixel camera for snapping photos and recording video, in-built GPS so you’ll never get lost again, and a 3.5mm earphone jack for listening to music on the move. The pre-loaded quick-links include favourite sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Flickr. And as you would expect from a BlackBerry smartphone, there’s also a user-friendly SureType® QWERTY key pad which makes writing messages and making phone calls quick and easy.

Richard Warmsley, Head of Internet and Entertainment, T-MobileUK, commented: T-Mobile’s Pay once BlackBerry is the world’s first package to offer a year’s instant email and internet for a one-off payment. For an affordable £179.99, get a brand new silver BlackBerry Pearl smartphone and unlimited e-mail and web for 12 months, with top-ups available for calls and texts. When life can feel busier than ever, it’s even more important that everyone has the right to easy email and web access to keep friends and family close, and to help to organise their busy lives. Now customers have a grab-and-go quality BlackBerry solution that means they don’t have to think about the cost of using email and internet services for 12 months.

OS Alert: BlackBerry Bold 9000 OS 5.0.0.90 Leaked…

featured_image_leaked_os_bold_5.0.0.90

New OS release for the Bold.  I’ve played around with the OS and it’s still very buggy so use at your own risk. It’s a very very early beta release so I don’t really recommend using this as a full-time OS.  Be sure to back everything up thoroughly as chances are you will be reverting back to a previous OS.

Anyways hit the LINK to find instructions and links to download the OS.

Enjoy!

Blackberry Bold Released In Japan (not without problems!)

February 28, 2009 by admin

RIM has announced the introduction of the 9000 Bold to Japan, which will include quad-band UMTS service, and a future device sans camera.

In the press release from RIM is included the sentence, “Among the smartphone’s rich set of multimedia capabilities is an optional 2 megapixel camera with video recording – Docomo will also offer a model with no camera…”.

Quad-Band UMTS? Read the specs for the device:

  • UMTS / HSDPA (up to 3.6Mbps ³): 2100/1900/850/800 MHz
  • GSM®/GPRS/EDGE:1900/1800/900/850 MHz

Additionally, the device will include a newly redesigned QWERTY keyboard and support for Japanese text input.

It looks like four bands of HSPA was too much for a BlackBerry to handle as Japanese carrier DoCoMo has suspended sales of the Bold due to overheating issues. Since its February 20th launch, DoCoMo has sold approximately 4,000 Bolds but after receiving more than 30 complaints about overheating keypads while charging, DoCoMo decided it was best to halt sales while RIM investigates the matter. RIM is being quite tight-lipped on the matter and would only comment with, “This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week and sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter.” RIM went on to clarify that faulty batteries are not to blame. For those of you scoring at home, this brings the number of carriers that have suspended sales of the Bold up to two thus far. Anyone taking bets on who might be the third?
